Fair Use

Fair use is a term that encompasses the use of copyrighted materials in your work.  Many websites contain the use of copyrighted material without the direct permission of the owner(s) of said material.  This, however, leads to no legal fiasco because fair use is in play.  The main question that comes with fair use is the question of what actually constitutes it.  Fair use applies when the material being used is used for either research or teaching purposes.  "Research" applies heavily to pretty much every blog I've ever made, so the application of fair use is quite important in my life.

Design

Design takes a key role in the success of one's blog.  While design isn't necessarily the actual content or message of your blog, it is the facilitator of your message.  in the same way you would want your research paper to be formal and academic in style, you want your blog to present itself in a sleek, professional manner.  This professionalism expands to a range of parts, such as color, layout, placement of information, and flow of the message.  All of these things should be considered when editing your blog.

A Literary Analysis of Fight Club

Fight Club  is a famous novel written by Chuck Palahniuk, and it is one of my favorite novels written to this day.  The novel shows a skillful use of literary techniques to deliver its driving messages on masculinity and consumerism. Fight Club's  appeal seems to be towards an audience in the young adult age range, as the setting and characters match the average young adult description: Out of college ,  working in fields they don't enjoy, angry at society around them.  The rhetoric of the novel and the character dialogue suggest this as well.  Our characters are anti-heroes that are full of raw emotions; such as Tyler Durden's overwhelming amounts of masculinity and radicalism, and the narrator’s fits of jealousy and discontent.  Actions taken are raw and extreme in nature, and the exigence of the story carries symbolic meaning in the messages Palahniuk aims to deliver.  The disastrous events in the story take place because of the destruc...

Writing - An Interview With Three People

I interviewed three people I know about their thoughts on writing.  These are their responses. What do you think about when you think about writing? 1: When I think about writing, I usually think about the assignment I’m given.  I’m an IT major, so I’m not a very good writer.  I’m really careful about my grammar, because I’m not very good with it.  I had to write a few stories for scholarships, so that’s been on my mind. 2: I like to wait for an idea to hit me, then I work off of that idea.  The general thoughts on the subject are on my mind.  Once an idea hits me, I can’t really think of anything else. 3: I like to think about my life experiences or dreams, and work off of that.  I think my life is very inspiring for me, so that’s usually a big part of what I write. When do you write? 1: I write when I have an assignment due. 2: I write when I finally feel inspired.  It could take up to a couple of weeks for me to get started, but ...

WEPO Intro Post

This is my first post to a regularly updating blog about WEPO (Writing, Editing, and Print Online).  This post specifically will be focused on the basics of this blog, and blogging in general. A little bit about me: My name is Lucas Dykes, and I am an Editing, Writing, and Media major at Florida State University.  I have made multiple blogs for both school assignments and personal reasons, and I genuinely enjoy blogging.  My passions include acting, writing, diet and exercise, and long walks on the beach. The semi-professional blogging taking place in this class for the purposes of learning and experimentation.  Regardless of any of our backgrounds in technology or blogging in general, getting hands-on experience with online work through blogging is a useful tool that enhances our knowledge of how to blog and work its more complex features.  While I, personally, have a decent amount of experience in the world of blogging, I can still see much room for impro...
